NovaBACKUP for Windows XP/2000/NT Server
Benefits & Known Limitations of the Server Scheduler
The difference between the Workstation and Server editions of NovaBACKUP is that the Server
version includes a specially designed scheduler built to run as a Windows XP. 2000 or NT Service.
The Workstation version has a scheduler which is a standard program that must be run while a user is
logged on to the machine.
There are certain benefits, and some limitations, for backups
scheduled with NovaBACKUP Server Edition scheduler running as a service.
Benefits
- The NovaBACKUP Server Edition scheduler runs as a Service, so it will run without
anyone being logged in. Perfect for late night backups when you don't want to leave
the server logged in and unattended.
- Allows administrators to better handle scheduling configurations in the background,
automatically, for easier control and administration.
For greater Windows XP/2000/NT network support, including support for open files, Exchange
Server and more, please check out our
NovaNet 8 line of network backup software.

Limitations:
- The NovaBACKUP Server Edition scheduler is designed to run
as a single Windows XP/2000/NT server backup solution only. Clients attached to
the server can not be backed up because NovaBACKUP Server Edition does not
support Universal Naming Conventions for Windows (UNC). The NovaBACKUP Server
Scheduler, by default, runs in the
"System"-level security context. This security context only allows for
"administrator" access to local files on the server. There is a
potential security risk to have a service run under any other setting
other than System. However, running the service at the System security
level also means any attempts to access network-related devices will not
be successful. For more information on security and file access rights,
UNC, or Windows services, please consult your Windows XP/2000/NT
administrator's guide.
- NovaBACKUP Server Edition doesn't support open file backup (such as MS Exchange,
SQL, etc…). If you need to protect servers with advanced database and open file backup,
please see our NovaNET 8 line of powerful network backup software
at http://www.network-backup.com/.
While we know NovaBACKUP 6.7 for Windows XP/2000/NT Server edition has some limitations,
in terms of ease of use, compatibility and affordability, it can't be beat.
