NovaNET-WEB Server – Ease of use from the moment it arrives
User Configuration
NovaNet-WEB makes it easy to configure new users. A simple configuration interface allows the administrator to quickly configure new users to begin using
NovaNet-WEB.

Redundant File Elimination - Recover from Image™
The Recover from Image concept takes advantage of existing PC procurement procedures from offering a disaster recovery capability to each user. Most
corporations with a large installed base have devised a standard installation for every desktop to minimize technical support. Since these programs are readily
available, NovaNet-WEB can be configured to only backup files that are unique to each user. This is done by using NovaNet-WEB's new Redundant File features to
automatically exclude the standard files from the backup set. This will significantly reduce the total storage space required on the server and increase the speed of the
backup for each user. When it comes time to recover from a hard drive failure, the standard image is combined with all of the unique files that have been backed up
to quickly rebuild the users entire computing environment. Other solutions require additional server administration and actually slow down the user backup with
excessive network communication. NovaNet-WEB is the first to offer a solution that integrates directly with the way most corporation handle the delivery of new
computers.

The NovaNet-WEB Backup Server Configuration Manager includes a Redundant Files tab. The path in this tab points to the Redundant File List that is to be used for
each user. This file can be updated as more applications are added to the standard image.
NNWPIC3 goes here
The Redundant File List Manager is the utility used by the administrator to create the Redundant File List that is automatically distributed to the users. This utility allows
the administrator to create several different lists and provides an importing capability for combining multiple lists into one. NovaStor will be providing some standard
Redundant File Lists for common applications such as Microsoft Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000 and Microsoft Office. NovaNet-WEB users can also share Redundant File
lists to ensure that only unique user data is backed up to their servers.
NNWPIC4 goes here
This is a view of the Properties of a Redundant File List. A Redundant File List can be composed of three different ype of exclusion rules:
· Specific File - This will scan all the file contents and exclude any files that match identically.
· File Names - This will allow the administrator to create a list of file names to ignore, regardless of file size or content.
· File Types - This will allow the administrator to create a list of file extensions to ignore. Similar to an exclude filter.
Tamper Proof Blocking
NovaNet-WEB v3.6 offers the administrator the ability to "lock down" certain functions on each NovaNet-WEB client. At any time the administrator can view or change
the settings that control the level of usage each client is offered. This could be used to prevent users from changing backup schedules or changing file selections.

Performance Monitor Integration
The NovaNet-WEB Server exposes more than 20 data points that can be viewed in real time or tracked over a period of time. This provides system administrators
with detailed up-to-the-minute performance information to help monitor and manage their growing end user backup solution.

Windows NT/2000 Service
The NovaNet-WEB Server software runs on Windows NT/2000 as a service. It automatically services all backup and restore requirest for each user. Since it is a
multi-threading application it can easily handle multiple simultaneous users without slowing down.
Fast Performance
NovaNet-WEB v3.6 includes several performance enhancements making practical to support over 10,000 users on a single server. The enhancements include:
Use of Component Object Model (COM)
This enables the client and server to process each user request over 30 times faster. Faster encryption performance using the Blowfish algorithm. (448-bit key
Blowfish is faster and more secure than 40-bit DES encryption.) Streamlined protocol facilitates fast authentication and minimizes overhead. Often cuts backup times in
half. Multi-threaded processes on the client and server make efficient use of CPU time and power.
Automatic Online Upgrades
All version upgrades can be distributed to all end-users automatically after completing a backup. When new versions of the client software are available, the update
patches can be placed on the server to allow client to automatically get updated to the latest version. All update patches are created with the same FastBITtm (link)
technology to reduce transfer time. Upgrades happen seamlessly without any user intervention required.
User Data Retention Policies
The server administrator can configure the restorable window for each user. This basically tells the server how many revisions of a particular file can be store on the
server. If the restorable window is set to 1 month, only the data backed up within the past 1 month is available for restoration.
NNWPIC7 goes here
Master Key Option
Some corporate users want the ability to have a Master Key on the server in order to recover critical corporate information in the event of an employee termination or
dispute. The master key can be set and applied for individual users. By default the master key is disabled on the server. If the users do not want their data to be
accessible by the administrator, than a setting on the client software can prevent the administrator from using the master on their account.
Server Usage Reporting
The Backup Server now has the ability to track how many accounts actually have data contained in them. This allows NovaStor to offer service providers a more
flexible usage-based licensing rather than user license-base licensing. A file containing the important usage information can be created with a single button click, and
sent to NovaStor for processing. There are no published usage-based licensing programs available at this time. Contact your NovaStor sales respresentative for the
latest licensing information.

Error Notification
The server software has the ability to alert administrators via e-mail of an error that has occurred. The administrator can get notified of any of the following types of
errors:
· Program Exceptions
· NT/2000 System Errors
· Backup/Restore Errors
· Connection Failures
· Authentication Errors
· Licensing Warnings/Errors.
The server can also write messages to the NT/2000 Event Log or send Windows NT/2000 Alerts.
NovaNet-WEB 3.6 now supports Microsoft Windows 2000, as well as several new enhancements, making it the most convenient way to protect critical business data
on laptops and desktop workstations over the LAN, WAN and the Internet.

Additional New Functionality in v3.67!
Open File Manager
New Version 7.0! Open File Manager is a utility that enables the NovaNET-WEB online backup program to capture open files even if the files are changing. Users are
able to continue to use their software, hardware and operating system secure in the knowledge that all important data will get backed up.
LDAP Authentication support
The Backup Server can now authenticate users against a standard LDAP database. To configure an LDAP server in the Backup Server Configuration Manager, the
adminstrator should set the LDAP server name or IP address, the LDAP server port and the base distinguished name (DN) that users will be authenticated against.
Dutch Language Support Added
When the product is installed, the user can choose Dutch, in addition to English and German, as the language for the interface. All language versions of the Client can
connect and backup to the same Backup Server.
Data Restore Wizard (CD-ROM Restore)
The administrator can now create restorable media sets that can be written to CD-ROM's or other media storage. The Data Restore Wizard steps the Backup Server
administrator through preparing an account's data so it can be immediately restorable by the user from local media. The wizard will also break the media into specific
size pieces if the user's data cannot fit on a single piece of media. The user's data is kept encrypted on the media as well, and can only be restored if the proper
secret key is known.
Quota Management
The Backup server now supports user quotas to control the amount of data backed up by users. Three different configurable quota thresholds are available. The
administrator can take action at each quota level, notifying the user they are near/at/over quota, and even preventing future backups from occurring until the user
reduces their server storage. Global quota settings can be applied to all users in combination with individual unique quota settings. Custom messages can also be
entered by the administrator that show up in logs and windows when certain quota thresholds are met. E-mail, Event Logs, and Alerts can also be triggered from the
Backup Server when account quota thresholds are met.
Removal of Server files by Client
The client now has the ability to remove specific files and directories from the server. Removing files in this way deletes the files from the server permanently, allowing
users to manage their disk quota if required. The file removal functionality can be controlled by the administrator and disabled if necessary.
Firewall Support for the Client
The Client is now able to communicate with proxys and firewalls that support the SOCKS5 protocol. This enables the Backup Client to communicate to Backup Servers
that are on the outside of a firewall. The firewall would normally make the Backup Server inaccessible to the Backup Client because the default port of 308 would be
blocked for security purposes.
Added SMTP E-Mail delivery to the server
Previously, the Backup Server used MAPI to generate e-mail notifications. Getting MAPI setup properly was difficult and had a number of restrictions. The Backup
Server now uses the industry standard SMTP to connect directly to an SMTP e-mail server and deliver e-mail notifications. Setup is as simple as specifying an SMTP
server, a 'From' address, and any number of 'To' or 'Cc' addresses.
Enhanced Management of Low Disk Space Situations on Server
The server now handles low disk space situations better than previous versions. If the server encounters a low disk space event, it can issue notifications and stop
backups from occurring which would further reduce the disk space.
Global Blocking Options on Server
In the Backup Server Configuration Manager, there are now global settings that can be applied to all accounts. One of these new global settings is the global blocking
options. This allows the administrator to apply client blocking options to all accounts instantly without have to set individual blocking options on each account. Individual
accounts can still contain specific blocking options that override the global blocking options.
Select Files for Backup using Wildcards
The Client now supports the use of wildcards in filters so users can select files using powerful wildcard specifications. Any number of wildcards can be specified in a
filter. An example of wildcard specifications: "a*.* - to select all file names starting with the letter 'a', "a*.txt",” a*.doc” etc.
Licensing Enhancements
The NovaNet-WEB licensing has been updated to include more support for future growth. The License Identification Numbers are currently 24 digits. The new License
Identification Numbers will be 27 digits. When installing the new version of NovaNet-WEB Server over an existing installation, the License Identification Number will be
automatically updated by the installation. The new license codes will not be compatible with any version prior to version 3.5.
Additionally
· New fields added for customized registration information.
· Export approval received for strong encryption. All 3.60 Client installs now use strong encryption. If you patch upgrade an International strength 3.01 Client to 3.60 it
will start using strong encryption automatically.
· The ability for administrators to force the user to use a secret key for encryption.
· New Client Dial-Up option to only close connection if it was originally opened by the Client.
· Test E-Mail button added to Client E-Mail configuration page.
· Number of Client bugs fixed from 3.01.
· Improved Server stability over 3.01.
· Automatic database repair if the Server database becomes corrupt.
· Client upgrade patches delivered with Server installer.
· Enhanced error reporting in the Server database for backups/restores.
· Server database is copied for reference to a subfolder during every install.
· Disabled users on the Server no longer count against active licenses.

The FastBITtm ™ Patching Process
- A Deeper Look Into The Technology
The FastBITtm™ patching process is the core technology behind our revolutionary program. The patching process involves the comparison of two different versions of
the same file and extracting the differences between the files. When the differences are extracted from the two files, they are saved into a new file and compressed
into what is known as a Patch. The patch file is often 85% to 99.9% smaller than the file which the patch was extracted from originally.
Applying this technology to the backup process will reduce the use of communication lines, backup tapes, and physical storage, all leading to one thing...Cost
Savings! Reduce your costs without sacrificing the integrity of your backups. Here's how FastBITtm patching technology is applied to your backup process.
FastBITtm picture here
When the backup program encounters a file for the first time, it compresses the file and sends it securely to the backup server. Once a file has been compressed and
sent to the server, never again will we send that entire file to the server. All future changes to your files will result in only the changes within the files being sent to the
server. When the changes are received by the server, they are applied to your backup files creating a complete up-to-date copy of your file system. As an optional
service, your daily FastBITtm Patch Backup files can be stored separately on the server allowing the flexibility of restoring any file(s) from your backup data as of any
point in time.
If you're wondering about the reliability of the patching technology, there's no need to wonder anymore. This technology is not new. It has been the only choice for
IBM, Microsoft, Novell, and many other hardware and software companies needing to update commercially distributed software. NoveNet - Web is the first program to
tightly integrate this existing technology into a high performance backup application.
The FastBITtm patching process manipulates files at the binary level. This means it can process any file type without error. Different types of files will yield different
FastBITtm patch sizes based on the binary organization of the file. We provide some FastBITtm patch statistics to illustrate this point further.
